The biggest mistake most ropers make is that they try to be too fast. Slowing down often results in improved catches and, believe it or not, faster runs. Consistency comes with horsemanship, and speed comes through consistency. Horsemanship is the solid foundation for good roping. Without horsemanship, your chances of winning are greatly reduced.
In my roping schools, I also teach the fundamentals of horsemanship to help bring them to the winners circle.
